You are a senior officer in charge of a sensitive election-duty deployment in a constituency
with a history of disturbances. On the eve of polling, you receive news that your only child
has been hospitalised in a serious condition in another city, several hours away. Your
spouse is travelling abroad and cannot return in time. Your presence is regarded as
essential to the peaceful conduct of polling the next day; at the same time, your family
urgently needs you. Handing over charge at short notice is procedurally possible but would
entrust a high-stakes responsibility to a less experienced colleague.
